A special educational facility for the specific needs of preschoolers has been implemented by a cooperation between Palmengarten and Communal Childcare Institutions in Haus Leonhardsbrunn. Here children can discover the wealth of plants on Earth in a special research station, they can model and handicraft in different niches, and help prepare lunch in the kitchen. The garden behind Haus Leonhardsbrunn is now being remodelled into an “explorer garden“ for children.
The program offers mostly three-day courses with special topics on groups of plants, as for instance bamboo, palms, or climbers. Within the three days children learn more about the characteristic features of plants, the animal living in and around these plants, how people interact with them and which conflicts might arise by using them. This holistic approach is aimed to teach children the need for sustainable development in conjunction with ecological, economic, social and cultural aspects of plant utilization.
Initially the facility offered programs for Communal Childcare Institutions only; however, since 2011 we have been able to offer our services to all interested childcare centers.
Support for this project has been granted by: Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), Stiftung Flughafen Frankfurt/Main für die Region, and Stiftung Polytechnische Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main.
